Games Like WheelMates: It Takes Two, Re-Volt and More
This page is built from what people actually said in the Steam discussions, Firevolt’s own announcement and the launch reviews, not from a generic list.
What WheelMates takes from where
Firevolt’s announcement (Jan 28, 2026): “Inspired by classic RC games like Re-Volt and our love for puzzle-platformer experiences, we wanted to spice them up with a cooperative approach.” The Steam forum nicknamed it “It Takes Two (AA batteries)”.
For the co-op puzzle half
- It Takes Two. The comparison every review makes: strictly two players, a Friend’s Pass, and a house where furniture is terrain. The difference is that It Takes Two gives each player different abilities per chapter, while WheelMates gives both cars the same kit and asks you to split roles per puzzle instead.
- Split Fiction. Named on the Steam forum as proof that co-op-only games sell; same studio as It Takes Two, same structure, more variety per chapter.
- We Were Here (series). A forum regular’s pick for what WheelMates actually plays like: communication puzzles where one player sees what the other needs. The lift-cart and crane puzzles are that idea with cars.
- Orbitals. The Co-op Company reviewed it in the same week as WheelMates and pointed their viewers to it as the other It Takes Two-style release of the month.
For the RC driving half
- Re-Volt (1999, on Steam). The game Firevolt cites and the one older players on the forum remember: RC cars racing through houses, gardens and toy shops with pickups. Racing, not puzzles; a forum request for a Re-Volt-style online racing mode got a “strong candidate for a future update” from Firevolt.
- Micro Machines. The other nostalgia answer in the “so nostalgic” thread: tiny vehicles on kitchen tables and pool tables.
- Chained Wheels. Not similar, but worth knowing: a player was sure he had seen WheelMates trailers with full-size cars chained together on a cliff. That was Chained Wheels. If a trailer shows big cars, it is the wrong game.
If the RC handling is the problem
The main negative in launch reviews is that RC physics make precise platforming tiring. If that is you, the co-op list above is where to go; WheelMates without the cars is roughly It Takes Two’s first chapter. If the driving is the point, stick with it and lower the sensitivity in settings (controls).
